The provincial regiments were created by the ordinance of August 4, 1771. They took over from the provincial militias that had been created on November 29, 1688 during the War of the League of Augsburg in the form of temporary provincial militias, then permanent militias created by the ordinance of February 26, 1726. The provincial regiments were abolished by the decree of March 4, 1791 and the law of March 20, 1791 of the Constituent Assembly.
